DX Reports / Special event stations
« Last post by k4lrx on April 30, 2018, 11:41:38 AM »
The latest one is the 4X70 prefixes, followed by a single letter, now there are supposed to be enough stations on with this event to work all the letter stations, the letters will spell Israel. Ok, so far only one, or two have been activated. You might work them all except for one key letter, that will have very limited activity. If you are so inclined to try for this award it will involve paper work and some expense, so good luck in finding them all and indeed working them. The rules are listed in this month's QST in the Special event stations listings.

Small window of an opening on twenty meters, we have the following 14.175 A52YL this one is very rare due to the fact it is XYL op. Most of the transmission was blocked due to chatter from the West Coast. We can come back to this one later.

BD7DX 1400 14.009 no problem 8)

BD5WU 14.024 up no problem to work 8)

3W1T 14.003 14.15Z No problem  8)

The only thing worth mentioning in the last few days has been XV1B, but not much activity from this station. Reports have been posted of twenty meters 14.062 KhZ and this is a cw operation. However, one contact then a long wait and maybe one, or two more, nothing in succession. Mostly reporting has been done via the  W3LPL network and that gives doubt as if it was ever copied in the first place. There were one, or two reports stating "Heard in California" but it does not state who heard them, or from what part of California?  Oh Well, let's hope for better band conditions then we hear the DX like everyone else does.

Little to report however there has been short activity of H44 on 20 around 14.260 this is a good one to catch, times have varied a little, but for the most part around 0100Z. Another one that is short activity is YJ0 this operation has been heard on 15 CW with various frequencies, main one seems to be 21.040 and times around 1300Z. Both make a few contacts and vanish, window does not last long at all. Not much else to note, bands are pretty dead in the afternoon and for the most part during the evening.

Equipment Reviews / Palstar AA-1K Amp
« Last post by k4lrx on April 21, 2018, 12:49:12 PM »
If you checked your QST for this month, you will find on page 115 a full page add for Palstar's roll out of a KW solid state amp. Palstar is another entry into the solid state amplifier  productions. This company was known for good antenna tuners and I was surprised that they made the leap in to solid state. This model is a one KW PEP offering and operates every band from 160 to six, the unit comes in two pieces, one for the power supply and the other for the deck. This unit is offered for $3495 from HRO, personally it is overpriced for what you get in terms of power and it comes without an antenna tuner. I think for the value the Elecraft is a much better choice, less money and full legal limit. Revue my write up on it on this site, it just makes good sense and money sense to shop around.

Just a few things to report and indeed they are sparse, There is meager activity from T32 this one is quite common, seems like there are numerous operations from this island. However, activity has been on twenty what little there is of it. Check around 14.222 during the evening hours, station was on made about a dozen contacts and gone. In other activity there is also activity, again very meager from E51, again twenty meters during the evening hours. This one has varied in frequency and works cw and SSB as well, since the hours have varied so much it would be pointless to list the last heard details, check DX scape to see if they have been spotted.

The 80 meter season is slowly coming to an end, in the next month or so the band will be noisy and pretty worthless for DX, we are looking forward to the fall once again and adding some new ones. From my location in the last week, 6/10/15 useless, twenty some dx, lots of dead time 40/80/160 will get noisy, so maybe time to take a look at antennas and do some repair work if needed.

About the only real action is Z66D 3.524KHz up at 0200Z. Nice signal when it is up, sometimes down in the noise, but a good one. Latest DX expedition that is to happen in October will be activation of Ducie Island, VP6 this is a separate entity and the last activity was about ten years ago. Stay tuned on this one.

Not much else at this time, pretty bad bands.

Bands are pretty bad I did manage to work JT1CO 14.027 up 1 around 1300Z, that was about it for the day. 3B7A has folded up their tent, I never did get a shot at them on 15, the operation hours varied so in the afternoon, we just could not find them at the right time. Today 15 was totally dead, so next time maybe we can land a contact, only other station worth the mention was ZD7VC 14.310 around 1900Z, good signal.

Nothing much else to rave about, Oh did forget another Z6 operation, so far just scattered contacts, fade outs and no propagation prevented them from making a large amount of contacts. Stay tuned, may have more info in the next few days.
